the bedlam in goliath is definitely a faster paced album. the closest thing to slower songs like asilos magdelena, and the widow, would be tourniquet man. which is also the shortest song on the album. no time for slow songs on this one.

goliath and parts of agadez are the only songs that resemble such favorites as l’via l’viaquez, drunkship of lanterns, viscera eyes, and one of my all time favorites day of the baphomets, more rhythmic, cultural grooves that make you want to dance. soothsayer seems at times like it is trying, but it remains with the more intense songs that make up the majority.

there is definitely that underlying rhythm throughout the album that they have perfected and stuck with since frances the mute.

this album has a de-loused seamlessness to it, but at a much faster pace. it revisits their post-at the drive-in days like the tremulant ep. making this a great mix of the different sounds they have experimented with, polished, and refined since the less structured but classic avant-garde days of at the drive-in.

all in all it is a non stop work of art. they just can’t disappoint and can’t be stopped. another testament to the genius that is omar rodriguez lopez and cedric bixler zavala.

with help and support from the many musicians who have played live, helped write, and helped record, like john frusciante and flea. (what was that you were saying about the bad influence of the chili peppers? you know who you are).

here is an article explaining the concept and inspiration for bedlam in goliath, with audio clips

the mars volta’s new album “the bedlam in goliath” comes out tomorrow.

they recently put two new songs, “metatron,” and “ouroboros” on their myspace. “wax simulacra” has been on their myspace and available for download from itunes for some time now.

i have seen mixed reviews about this album thus far, some just plain arrogant, saying things like the red hot chili peppers are a bad influence on the mars volta (you know who you are).

well if you are familiar at all with me and my site you will know that i disagree very much with that.

the same reviewer apparently dislikes funk and slap bass as well. well jog off then and go listen to some non funky, closed minded, non experimental, white bread, non cultural, non ethnic, non diverse, homogeneous rubbish and leave the mars volta to the rest of us.

the mars volta also have four videos on their website. they aren’t the actual music videos, but you get to hear the songs. the videos are also pretty entertaining. “goliath” is a good one.

“wax simulacra” from their upcoming album belam in goliath jan 29th

the mars volta are going to be on the david letterman show this thursday the 17th.

the mars volta will also be celebrating the release of “the bedlam in goliath” with a show at san diego’s soma on january 29th.

map to soma

tickets go on sale this friday, january 18th at 10am pst here.

you can pre-order “the bedlam in goliath” on amazon now, also there is a game on there that you can play called “goliath the soothsayer.”

“Omar Rodriguez Lopez (guitar, producer) was in a curio shop in Jerusalem when he found the Soothsayer, an archaic Ouija-style ‘talking board.’ ”

the game is based on a true story. said story is what inspired the mars volta to write “the bedlam in goliath.”

go here to play it. it’s really creepy. it reminded me of resident evil.

bedlam in goliath single “wax simulacra” now available on itunes. see previous post.
