medulla by bjork.
this is a very under appreciated album. bjork is a very unorthodox and eccentric artist, and this being her most unorthodox album makes it hard for some people to grasp. the album is predominately a cappella. most of the music is made by either bjork herself vocalizing or other vocalists beatboxing, making noises, and vocalizing. one of those guest vocalists is the great mike patton. mike appears on the song, “pleasure is all mine.” it’s just vocalizing, but those who know him, know it’s him.
for those who are existing fans of bjork this album may not have appealed to you the first time, but give it another chance, let it grow on you. for those of you who aren’t bjork fans, good luck. i wouldn’t wager too much that this album would grab you in the way “post” did for most people getting into bjork. who knows though, give it a shot. my advice would be to ease into this album by way of listening to it last.
if you are not a bjork fan, but are interesting in becoming one, or are just bored with the music you have and are looking for something different. here is the order that i would recommend:
1. post
2. debut
3. homogenic
4. vespertine
5. volta
6. medulla
but like i said, i feel medulla a very under appreciated album. so if you’re feeling brave, knock youself out. otherwise, follow the list. enjoy.

the incomparable mike patton lends voice to i am legend
January 8, 2008

mike patton did the vocal sounds for the vampiric humanoids in i am legend. you can read the whole artical and interview from movieweb here. he’s also doing the voice for the main character in bionic comando, as well as creating a magnitude of vocal sounds for the video game left 4 dead.
mike patton is a composer and musical genius who gave us many amazing bands such as mr. bungle, faith no more, tomahawk, peeping tom, fantomas…
as well as his collaborations and contributions on and with the dillinger escape plan, kadda/patton, general patton vs. the executioners, lovage, the melvins, bjork, team sleep, the list goes on and on. the man is a one man music machine. such talent can hardly be contained in a single human being, which explains all the work he produces.
this video is “god hates a coward” by one of my favorite of his bands, tomahawk. this video features him singing through a gas mask. he did this when i saw tomahawk years back and it was incredible. he was on stage behind his sound board podium and he strapped that gas mask on and i thought to myself, “is he going to sing through a flippin gas mask… he is!”
it was an amazing performance. the audience was full of narrow minded people, they didn’t appreciate his talent. tomahawk was opening for (i won’t say who), but most of the people didn’t know who the hell tomahawk was, let alone mike patton. that however did not stop mike from putting on an amazing show.
it’s surprisingly rare to come across a mike patton fan, but when you do they are generally die hard fans. i discovered the other day, a guy whom i work with is a huge mike patton fan, which was exciting! it’s great to meet fellow fans.
if you’re new to mike patton you can listen so some of his stuff here, just follow the links to his other bands myspaces to listen to others. enjoy!
