around your neck- wet zoo ep- annuals
this was one of the songs that got me into annuals. the wet zoo split with sunfold was the first i’d heard from annuals. i was instantly in love, and right away picked up “be me he,” an incredible album. the wet zoo ep is the first of more to come, annuals are working on a new album and with wet zoo as a taste, the rest sounds very promising. “around your neck” is a very fun, upbeat song in between two slow, beautiful songs, “sore” and “just stay in” that make up the wet zoo ep. it is the most solid ep i’ve heard in a long time.
i could honestly go on and on about how much i love annuals, but i will put the reins in your hands and let you discover their wonderful sound. the wet zoo split ep is, like i’ve said, very good, and be me he is amazing. basically everything they’ve put out is great. so if you like anything that you hear, get those albums, you won’t be disappointed.

strangers in the night- his greatest hits- frank sinatra
this song pops into my head at the most random times. i think it’s because of that beer commercial, the “dooby dooby doo” part, once that starts i start singing the whole song. it drives my girlfriend crazy, it probably doesn’t help that i act like i’m serenading her every time i sing it. but after all the random times it’s stuck in my head, and every time i listen to it, it’s still a great song.

gold lion- show your bones- yeah yeah yeahs
this is a great video for an excellent song. karen o is completely insane and i love her. those three are great together, they’re a very good fit. the yeah yeah yeahs are working on a new album if you didn’t know. they’re not finished nor have they set a release date. they also released an ep, “is is,” july 24th of last year. they’re songs that were written in 2004 during the tour for “fever to tell.” you can hear the song “kiss kiss” from the ep on their myspace. stay tuned for more on the new album and a release date.

shade- church mouth- portugal. the man
i was introduced to portugal. the man by a guy i worked with and i thank him very much for it. never a dull moment with portugal. the man. church mouth is an excellent album. “shade” is a slow, groove. just sit back, close your eyes, and enjoy. you can hear “shade” and more of portugal’s great works on their myspace.
this quote sums them up very nicely,
“Portugal. The Man is the band to get many of us re-excited and inspired by energetic rock music. They bring us back to a place where we remember why we once started listening to this type of music.” -The New U UC Irvine

home for an island- home for an island- the exit
i actually have this same video in another post i did about the exit because it’s a great song and i love them. like i said before the sound quality in this video is shit, but the video is really good. the drummer is especially fun to watch. they’re working on a new album, but they have yet to release a date. stay tuned for more details.
their guitarist and singer, benjamin brewer, is marrying m.i.a, the lucky bastard. no, i’m sure he’s good enough for her, i have faith in her judgment. she’s an incredible, musician, artist, and human being. if you don’t know her i suggest you familiarize yourself with her.

red light pledge- when broken is easily fixed- silverstein
silverstein is a canadian emo, or “screamo” band that i used to be a lot more into. “when broken is easily fixed” is extremely emo. their next album, “discovering the waterfront” is more mature, great album. then there is their latest album, “arrivals & departures.” it’s not a terrible album, it just lacks the raw, energy that they’ve proved to us that they’re capable of. i just couldn’t get into it, maybe eventually. it just pales in comparison to it’s predecessor “discovering the waterfront.” hopefully the next album grabs me a lot easier. and yes, their name comes from author shel silverstein. shane the singer, use to use shel’s poems as lyrics in practices.
“when broken is easily fixed” was a big part of my music lineup when i was seventeen. it’s a very raw and emotional album and they were emotional times… ahh, teen angst. so it still remains pretty special to me, even though i don’t listen to it much anymore. musically “discovering the waterfront” is a lot more fun to listen to.
also, they are amazing live. i saw them way back in the day at gabe’s (the picador), a tiny room above a dive bar in iowa city. during “the weak and the wounded” when shane screams “in my eyes… in my heart” he put the mic at his side and just screamed the line at us. he was right in front of me, and in such close quarters it was really powerful, i’ll never forget it. it’s amazing how when someone’s screaming into a microphone you don’t think anything of it. but when they take it away, you’re like, “whoa, that guy’s screaming at me.” it’s funny how much difference a microphone makes. also, when someone is singing in front of you, no mic, just singing, it’s all awkward. but stick a mic in their hand and “oh, they’re just singing.”

sick sad little world- a crow left of the murder- incubus
upon first listen of this album, this was instantly my favorite song. that guitar line at the beginning just got me. however, “pistola” is now my favorite. this album is amazing! they just blew me away with this one. “s.c.i.e.n.c.e.” is still my favorite, but this one is a close second. there’s a lot less funk on this one than previous albums, but what they lacked in funk, mike einziger (guitarist) made up for in skill, experimentation, and technique. that guy is insanely talented.
“sick sad little world”
if you bought the limited edition version of this album it came with a dvd. the “brandon’s injury” video is hilarious. as a matter of fact here it is. by the way that’s the drummer, jose, playing the part of “brandon.”

don’t stand so close to me- zenyatta mondatta- the police
the police are currently on their very last tour. oh how i’m going to miss them. the tickets are insanely expensive. this is a classic song that speaks for itself. i love sting’s giant harry potter glasses as, “the teacher.” weren’t the 80’s wonderful?
“don’t stand so close to me”

soldier’s poem- black holes and revelations- muse
this is a slow, beautiful song from an amazing album. i’ve written about this album before in an f³ shuffle.
this video is sad, but it’s a testament to what brave people are out there doing for their country. don’t even get me started on this fucking war. i don’t support the war, but i support the brave young people that are risking their lives fighting it. a close friend of mine from high school joined the navy to pay for school just before this disaster, it’s been rough. so if you’re sensitive about the war or have family in service you might not want to watch the video. the song is beautiful, and the album is incredible, so you could just buy it if you don’t have it. you won’t regret it.

pyramid song- amnesiac- radiohead
a perfect ending. this is one of my ultimate favorite radiohead songs, and probably one of the most beautiful songs ever written. in my eyes, there is nothing better than radiohead.
“i jumped in the river and what did I see?
black-eyed angels swimming with me
a moon full of stars and astral cars
all the figures i used to see
all my lovers were there with me
all my past and futures
and we all went to heaven in a little row boatthere was nothing to fear and nothing to doubt”

the nephilim- the art of drowning- afi
this afi is not what most people know today. this was the last album before sing the sorrow. from sing the sorrow they changed their approach. it appealed to a larger crowd than their original following, and with that they lost a lot of old fans. many old fans said that they’d sold out, and honestly from some aspects of it all they kind of did. but the music didn’t suffer. it was different, but not terrible.
personally i love sing the sorrow. i think it’s a fantastic album. it doesn’t have all of the old punkness that their previous albums had, but it’s still a real solid album. they always had that mourning, goth edge to their music, they are just embracing it more now. (kind of like alkaline trio)
times change, and people as well. like i’ve said before, you can’t expect people to make the same exact music their whole career. look at mike patton, he’s made an album in almost every genre there is. let the artists stretch their wings, they don’t owe you anything.
this isn’t the real video, these guys make funny interpretations of a lot of songs. enjoy…

teenage kicks- will destroy you- driver of the year
i’ve written about driver of the year before, they’re from my hometown. teenage kicks opens their latest album with style. i love this album and i love the way they’re going. they have such a unique, and refreshing sound for this day and age.
if you’re never in the quad city area (on the mississippi between iowa and illinois) then definitely check them out on itunes or their myspace page.
for some people, the singer’s voice might take some time to grow on you, but give them a chance. they’re a great band with a great sound, help them get off their feet by supporting them.

spider home- gigantic 7″ single series- o’death
i came across o’death last october sometime and they still remain one of my favorite new (to me) bands that i’ve discovered or been introduced to. in previous posts i’ve written about how much i love them. they’re very different and not for everybody, but i hope you give them a chance because there is so much soul and beauty in their music. so please give them a chance. i didn’t listen to anything like them before, and now i love them.
spider home is an insanely good track. i’d say it’s my favorite but all of their songs are. they have yet to write a song i don’t love, and i don’t see one coming anytime soon.
listen to spider home here. you’ll love it.

dollars and cents live- i might be wrong live recordings- radiohead
i really don’t need to say much about this song. it holds it’s own. if you’re not a radiohead fan or haven’t ever heard this song before, i forgive you, but it’s never too late to start. the album that the original version of this song comes from, “amnesiac,” is a good place to start.

the buzzing- parade of chaos- zao
zao is a staple in my music collection. even though i am not friends anymore with the person who introduced me to zao, i still thank that person very much for showing them to me. i like to focus on the positive influences and ways that people touch my life along the way. life’s too short to dwell on the past and focus on the negative. like chuck palahniuk says in invisible monsters, (to the best of my recollection) “we are the collective effort of everyone we’ve ever met.” my copy of the book is in storage and it’s been at least six years since i read it last, so that’s pretty good for me.
anyway, back to the song…
having undergone a complete change in its lineup, zao is technically its own cover band, but the fans make them the same. they may have different members and a slightly different sound at times, but to their loyal fans, they can do no wrong.
the buzzing opens their classic album, parade of chaos, with that raw power in which daniel weyandt leads the band. it gets you rearing and ready to go for “suspend/suspension” and the rest of the album. “parade of chaos” has more of a “hardcore dance your ass off” feel than the other albums. it just sounds like they had more fun writing and recording this album.
i definitely prefer older zao to newer zao, but i still remain loyal. my personal favorite album is “where blood and fire bring rest,” fantastic album. if you don’t have it, buy it now.

don’t call it a comeback- i am the movie- motion city soundtrack

this was the first song i heard by these guys. it was on some comp that my ex had.
this song is a little misleading if you’ve never heard motion city soundtrack. it’s heavier and crazier than really all of their other work. so you really shouldn’t base your opinion solely on this song. it’s a great song, but it doesn’t serve as very good representation of the rest of their songs.
i saw motion city soundtrack at warped tour about three years ago. they put on an amazing live show. lots of energy, very entertaining. no gimmicks or really even light show, just great music played extremely well.
this is m.c.s.’s first album. they have gotten more poppy since this album, but they have not gone too far. they still stick to their roots, they just have gotten a lot catchier.
for any moog fans. they are a very moog-heavy band. love the moog.
this video is ridiculous, but hilarious

her middle name was boom- everything you ever wanted to know about silence- glassjaw

this album is incredible. this was one of my “transitionary albums,” it helped to open me up to other and better types of music than i was listening to.
it starts slow, gradually builds, and at the chorus it really takes off, then winds back down. towards the end he does his classic rambling/screaming that us glassjaw fans so enjoy. all in all it’s a pretty slow song, but daryl palumbo can sing fast and slow and make it great.
this video is descent but you really need to hear the real version. you really should just buy this album.

the velorium camper III: al the killer- in keeping secrets of silent earth: 3- coheed and cambria

one of my favorite co&ca songs. who am i kidding all of their songs are my favorite. they are such an amazing band.
for those of you who don’t know, the albums by co&ca are concept albums, sort of “soundtracks” for the graphic novels “the armory wars” created by singer/guitarist claudio sanchez. the whole concept of the band is just ingenious. even if you’ve never read the graphic novels you can read the lyrics and follow the story.
music written about real life things like life, love, loss, and war, are all well and fine but this is just something different, it’s very creative. not only does their music tell a story, but it is really good music. they could have had the same concept and bombed on the music aspect, but they didn’t because they rock.

autumn shade II- winning days- the vines

my boss at an old job showed me the vines. it was around the time that all the shitty “the” bands were popular (the strokes, the hives, etc…) so i wasn’t too keen on making any attempt to check them out. he assured me that they were really good.
i checked them out and loved them. at the time he showed me the vines, i wasn’t into anything like them or any of the “the” bands, but they have all grown on me, the vines most definitely.
this song is a good testament to their beautiful sound. when i listen to them i just feel like i should be high on dope and lsd, wearing bell bottoms and smelling flowers and shit. they’re just have such a peaceful vibe.
little known fact: the singer craig nicholls has asperger’s syndrome, and he’s a very successful and talented musician. go craig!

i first discovered refused years ago on… i think it was mtv. they were having this marathon of videos and i saw the video for “new noise” (below). it’s a weird, but great video and a fantastic song. it was my first taste of refused and i wanted more. if you’ve never heard refused, watch the video for “new noise,” you’ll love it!
“new noise”
altogether this is an incredible album, heavy, unique, fun, life changing. maybe not life changing, but hell you never know. it may be for you. so yeah, if you like new noise, buy this album, trust me, do it.

March 14, 2008
i actually lucked out and managed to find every song to attach with each post.
hot hot hot!!!- kiss me, kiss me, kiss me- the cure
well off to a fantastic start.
hot hot hot!!! is one of my favorite cure songs. it’s among their more upbeat songs that can pull you out of your funk as opposed to some others such as lullaby, lovesong, and boys don’t cry. although the morose side of the cure is wonderful if you just want to indulge your gloom. boys do cry, especially if they’re listening certain cure songs.
all in all hot hot hot!!! is just a really fun song, about how lightning keeps striking around him and almost killing him, but he likes it, he “likes it a lot,” it leaves him “feeling hot hot hot!!!” nice optimistic attitude.
the cure are just all together great. some music is best at certain moods. the cure have something for every mood. whether it’s huddled alone in a dark corner listening to lullaby “crying like a little bitch with a skinned knee and shit.” or hot hot hot!!! that makes you want to dance like kevin bacon in footloose.
the cure are playing the allstate arena in rosemont il. tickets
great video. one of robert smith’s many different styles/appearances.

kennedy curse- alexisonfire- alexisonfire
kennedy curse comes from alexisonfire when they were at their prime. “crisis” (their latest album) is good don’t get me wrong, but if it tried to hold a candle to their self-titled album, self-titled would take the candle and burn crisis to death, then piss on the ashes.
kennedy curse is a great song for alexisonfire virgins. it showcases their range in one song. from the ambient intro and breakdowns, to the raw intensity of the verses. with both singers stretching their chords to the max that they do so well.
i love bands with two singers, alexisonfire, the blood brothers, the forecast, (old) from autumn to ashes, arcade fire, the exit, the postal service… good variety, good sound, i like what two people can bring to the table as opposed to one.
___________________________________________________________________________
your song- elton john – elton john
this is my all time favorite elton john song. i love sir elton, he really takes me back. (haha, it’s funny because i’m 22 and this song was written 15 years before i was born… you get it).
i’m going to gay it up here… this song appears in moulin rouge sung by ewan mcgregor. wow can that guy sing. obi-wan kenobi’s got a set of lungs on him. moulin rouge is a great movie by the way if you haven’t seen it. it’s a musical though so if you don’t like musicals then you might be better off watching die hard or something, i don’t know.
so in summary, elton john is amazing, ewan mcgregor can sing like nobody’s business, and your song is a great song.
____________________________________________________________________________
i lied my face off- alkaline trio- alkaline trio
so back when alkaline trio was good they released this album consisting of out of print eps, 7″s, and some comp songs. this album is a staple for any self respecting alkaline trio fan.
my favorite part of the song… “i’m bad luck, can’t fuck. got no reflection today. maybe i’ll stay down next time i get hit by a train.”
i do have to admit that “crimson”(their latest album) has grown on me, but it’s the same as with alexisonfire, it’s just not as good as their old stuff.
alkaline trio are utterly, horribly pessimistic drunks, and i love them.
(for some reason this video freezes for the first 15 seconds)

a rat’s nest- analyse ep- thom yorke
thom yorke, singer of radiohead, genius extraordinaire.
this ep came from his eraser project. if you don’t have the eraser or the two eps, i’m sorry. but it’s not too late, buy them now, you won’t regret it.
thom says the eraser is not a solo thing because that would imply that he’d walked away from radiohead, which he hasn’t. and it’s not a side project because a side project “is like a doodle,” and this was something that he was completely invested in, he did it “proper.” all of this is in the interview that i will attach to this post.
this song is reminiscent of “like spinning plates,” and “backdrifts,” pulsating, haunting, beauty. if robots had hearts, this is the sound their hearts would make. mmhmm… robots, beautiful ones.
everything this man touches turns to gold. he is a prodigy, and my inspiration for a lot of my work be it writing, music, or art. words fall short of his eminence, so i will call it a night, and bid you all adieu.

first and foremost, in previous f³. s. posts i said that i was looking for a music player. well i went back and forth about all of that.
i found a way to make a link directly to the song on itunes but wordpress doesn’t allow that. (because it’s a money making venture)
also, i found a way to put my copy of the song online and make it accessible to you via a little music player, but i decided against that because that would be providing a song for free to the masses without the artists consent. (and yes i realize that youtube videos rarely have the artists consent, but i am able to get past that on some disconnected level.)
so since my main purpose of this blog is to share the music i love with complete strangers i decided to just leave it to you to take my word and seek out the songs on your own. if my review of an artist/album/song inspires you to buy said artist/album/song then i have accomplished what i set out to.
i will always do my best to direct you to the artist/album/song by any means i can. e.g. myspace, itunes, amazon, etc.
thank you for your continued support and understanding.

mercy- kiss + swallow- IAMX
IAMX is led by ex-front man of the sneaker pimps, chris corner. IAMX is an electronic, synthpop, glam, hedonistic adventure. it makes you feel dirty, in the most indulgent way. chris’ performance in IAMX is like if ziggy stardust and jared leto had a love child who loved synthpop.
“mercy” is my favorite song on “kiss + swallow.” it’s a slow hypnotic groove. chris’ vocals in the chorus give you chills. it’s just hauntingly beautiful.
both “kiss + swallow” and “the alternative,” are great albums, if you like this type of music. no filler songs, just good music.

this is one of simon and garfunkel’s most popular songs, but it’s still one of my favorites. simon and garfunkel are a great selection if you just want to relax or reminisce. they’re the epitome of peace, harmony and love. it easy to forget about all the evil and war in the world while listening to them, and sometimes that’s necessary.

twisted nerve- bernard herrmann the essential film music collection- the city of prague philharmonic orchestra
this is just a bizarre and eerily beautiful song. for all of the quentin tarantino fans, it’s the song in kill bill vol. 1 that elle/daryl hannah is whisting as she’s going to kill “the bride”/beatrix kiddo/uma thurman.
it was one of those songs that got stuck in my head after every time i watched to movie so i had to buy it.

the line begins to blur- with teeth- nine inch nails
now, let’s barge our way into this calm, hippie love fest of a f³. s. with some nine inch nails. this song comes from “with teeth,” an album that was not immediately embraced by all, but most have come around.
this song starts off with a hard, heavy beat, with what sounds like trent screaming away from the microphone for a background effect. the chorus brings it all in with a classic melody, and ambiance before it’s torn apart again with that beat backed by,
“…is there somebody on top of me?
i don’t know, i don’t know
isn’t anybody stopping me?
i don’t know, i don’t know…”
for me and my significant other (who is the biggest nine inch nails fan i know) there is nothing that trent reznor can do that won’t please us. including (for those of you who don’t know) his newest 36 track instrumental album ghosts I-IV.

overdue- on a wire- the get up kids
“on a wire” is one of my “desert island” albums. no matter how many times i listen to it i could never get sick of it. from every conceivable angle it is simply perfect.
“overdue” is the opening track to “on a wire,” and a damn good one at that. slowly, instrument by instrument, sound by sound it eases you into the album. by the time the chorus arrives you’re set on cruise and you just enjoy the ride for the rest of the album.
