doves premiered a new song and video last night. “kingdom of rust” from their upcoming album kingdom of rust. you can hear the song below in the youtube video via bbc radio, but to watch the video you have to go to doves’ website and sign up:

“sign up as a Doves. net member then EXTRAS will appear on the Nav bar and you can access the video.”

looks like april 7th is the us release date. i had previously said the 6th, but that must be the uk release date.

the day is finally here!!

January 29, 2009

(sigh)… give me a second to compose myself….

ok… i don’t think that i can convey to you how much this band means to me. i think maybe once i have a child, it would be on par with how much i love this band.

this band is called doves. the reason for my overwhelmed state is because they finally have a definite title, release date, and a free download from their upcoming album that has been in the works for years now.

the new album is called kingdom of rust. this album was originally supposed to be released late 2007, but they put it on hold so drummer andy williams could spend time with his newborn daughter alice. they have officially finished and set a date, april 6th, 2009, is the wonderful day to mark on your calenders. they are across the pond so april 6th may or may not be the date for the states, they didn’t specify, but i’ll update as soon as i find out for sure. you can pre-order kingdom of rust from doves if you would like.

the english trio have so graciously provided a free download of the song “jetstream” which they describe as such:

Being fans of the Vangelis film score, ‘Blade Runner’, we always wanted to write an imaginary song for the closing credits on Ridley Scott’s classic… It’s called Jetstream…

“jetstream” is a phenominal song. within the first few seconds it evoked so much that i felt as if i would burst. i have a very strong sentimental tie to doves so “jetstream” may not hit you in the same way. but just at face value it is an epic song. as i listen to it i can just imagine having just finished watching blade runner (or do androids dream of electric sheep?) and watching the closing credits scroll by.

if you’re a novice to doves, please please check them out. download the free track, check out their myspace, and you can sample all of their previous albums on itunes. do yourself a favor. you’re missing out.

english trio doves, were planning on releasing their new album back in late 2007, but they put it on hold so drummer andy williams could spend time with his newborn daughter alice. they still have not released the title of the upcoming album, but they are about finished. definite date will be coming soon; they are planning on a spring 2009 release date as well as a uk tour to follow.

when i was about 15, my friend katie introduced me to an under appreciated band from england called doves.

http://www.doves.net/

doves is an english indie rock trio. (from left) jez williams, jimi goodwin, and andy williams. “their name was derived from the phrase, ‘like doves rising from the ashes,’ a reference to the burning of their original studio whilst working under the name sub sub.”-wikipedia

at the time that katie showed them to me i mainly just listened to metal. i hadn’t branched out too much. they were way different than anything i had ever heard. they are very soothing and melodic. it was definitely a nice change of pace from all the screaming.

the very first song that i heard was called “darker.” darker in itself doesn’t sound like any of their other songs, it’s dirtier, and heavier than anything i’ve heard from them. but it still has that unmistakable quality that they put in all of their songs. it’s on the extended version of the “lost souls” album.

from there my mind was opened immensely. they were my pioneers on a path to better and more beautiful music than what i had experienced .

the progression of their sound gets more “pop” and catchy with every album. when i first heard their latest release, “some cities,” i have to admit i was turned off at first. i had fallen in love with the melancholy, yet cozy sound of “lost souls.” but eventually i warmed up to it. i realized that “lost souls” held a special place in my heart that nothing else could hold a candle to. i now love their other albums for their own individual reasons.

lost souls (2000), the last broadcast (2002), some cities (2005)

doves are currently working on their fourth album. which was supposed to be released late this year, but it will be delayed because andy will be taking time off to spend time with his new child. but you can count on a review as soon as it drops.

i hope they know how much they touch the lives of their fans. they sure did a number on me… and i love them for it.

thank you katie for sharing doves with me. i couldn’t thank you enough, wherever you are.

like: the smiths, old radiohead, but at the same time nothing at all.
