hissing fauna, are you the destroyer? by of Montreal

today, the song below was my #1 song for today, and also where the quote of the day comes from.

qotd #11

“somehow you’ve red-rovered the gestapo circling my heart”

“the past is a grotesque animal” (a shorter version of the 12 min original)

you can hear the full version of  “the past is a grotesque animal” on their myspace as well as the entire hissing fauna, are you the destroyer? album.

here is an acoustic version of the same song, but it doesn’t have the same effect.

medulla by bjork.

this is a very under appreciated album. bjork is a very unorthodox and eccentric artist, and this being her most unorthodox album makes it hard for some people to grasp. the album is predominately a cappella. most of the music is made by either bjork herself vocalizing or other vocalists beatboxing, making noises, and vocalizing. one of those guest vocalists is the great mike patton. mike appears on the song, “pleasure is all mine.” it’s just vocalizing, but those who know him, know it’s him.

for those who are existing fans of bjork this album may not have appealed to you the first time, but give it another chance, let it grow on you. for those of you who aren’t bjork fans, good luck. i wouldn’t wager too much that this album would grab you in the way “post” did for most people getting into bjork. who knows though, give it a shot. my advice would be to ease into this album by way of listening to it last.

if you are not a bjork fan, but are interesting in becoming one, or are just bored with the music you have and are looking for something different. here is the order that i would recommend:

1. post
2. debut
3. homogenic
4. vespertine
5. volta
6. medulla

but like i said, i feel medulla a very under appreciated album. so if you’re feeling brave, knock youself out. otherwise, follow the list. enjoy.

one of my latest loves are the new pornographers. their album “challengers” is incredible. here is the video for the song of the same name.

“challengers”

if you haven’t heard them previously and like what you heard i strongly recommend that you get this album. “challengers” is one of the slower tracks on the album, so their songs are not all like that, but it is still a great taste of their sound. here’s another song.

“myriad harbour” and yes the whole band lives in dan’s hair.

this is one of my favorite songs of theirs, it’s from their album “twin cinema.” this is an hilariously great video, plus it has david cross in it. i love the martini scene… golden.

the prize fighter inferno

this album is called “my brother’s blood machine.” the prize fighter inferno is a solo project by claudio sanchez of coheed and cambria. musically this album is like what the postal service is to death cab for cutie. it’s claudio’s voice, but instead of the usual amazing guitar metal backing, it’s synth and drum machine beats and acoustic guitars.

the prize fighter inferno is the prequel to the armory wars, the graphic novels about the coheed and cambria story, told from the perspective of “the prize fighter inferno” a.k.a. jesse.

“Long-arm and Butchie Bleam, brothers brought together by physical distortion and social seclusion are about to find themselves in the running for the most unusual job in the world…..DEATH! Listen to the story unfold as we follow these two misunderstood yet maniacal minstrels of macabre in a neverending race for ultimate power. Listen to the disturbing details as the songs takes you through the hell that is the Blood Machine. This is a story being told in song……this is hell being unleashed through love and sound…… I am the hitchhiker doomed to tell the tale of Margretville, I am your Guide, I am the Prizefighter Inferno.”

it’s much calmer, and more mellow than co&ca, so if you don’t like this type of music it might take some getting used to. claudio’s voice is so distinctive though that you probably wouldn’t have much trouble getting into it if you’re a big co&ca fan.

you can buy the album here. it’s better if you buy the physical version, it comes with these really cool cards that you wouldn’t get with a download.

the prize fighter inferno’s myspace, you can listen to some of the songs there.

takk… by sigur ros

this second i am listening to track 8, “gong.” beautiful song. i love to listen to sigur ros when i paint. i either listen to them or bjork. love the ambiance.
