five for friday shuffle finally! i know, right?!
March 7, 2008
first and foremost, in previous f³. s. posts i said that i was looking for a music player. well i went back and forth about all of that.
i found a way to make a link directly to the song on itunes but wordpress doesn’t allow that. (because it’s a money making venture)
also, i found a way to put my copy of the song online and make it accessible to you via a little music player, but i decided against that because that would be providing a song for free to the masses without the artists consent. (and yes i realize that youtube videos rarely have the artists consent, but i am able to get past that on some disconnected level.)
so since my main purpose of this blog is to share the music i love with complete strangers i decided to just leave it to you to take my word and seek out the songs on your own. if my review of an artist/album/song inspires you to buy said artist/album/song then i have accomplished what i set out to.
i will always do my best to direct you to the artist/album/song by any means i can. e.g. myspace, itunes, amazon, etc.
thank you for your continued support and understanding.

mercy- kiss + swallow- IAMX
IAMX is led by ex-front man of the sneaker pimps, chris corner. IAMX is an electronic, synthpop, glam, hedonistic adventure. it makes you feel dirty, in the most indulgent way. chris’ performance in IAMX is like if ziggy stardust and jared leto had a love child who loved synthpop.
“mercy” is my favorite song on “kiss + swallow.” it’s a slow hypnotic groove. chris’ vocals in the chorus give you chills. it’s just hauntingly beautiful.
both “kiss + swallow” and “the alternative,” are great albums, if you like this type of music. no filler songs, just good music.

scarborough fair/canticle- parsley, sage rosemary, and thyme- simon and garfunkel
if you haven’t heard scarborough fair, ask your parents to dust off their old phonographs and play it for you. if they don’t have any simon and garfunkel, then either they have grown up to be what they told themselves they would never become, or they were the ones beating up all of the hippies.
this is one of simon and garfunkel’s most popular songs, but it’s still one of my favorites. simon and garfunkel are a great selection if you just want to relax or reminisce. they’re the epitome of peace, harmony and love. it easy to forget about all the evil and war in the world while listening to them, and sometimes that’s necessary.
simon and garfunkel= mom and dad’s elliott smith. (previous post on elliott smith.)

twisted nerve- bernard herrmann the essential film music collection- the city of prague philharmonic orchestra
this is just a bizarre and eerily beautiful song. for all of the quentin tarantino fans, it’s the song in kill bill vol. 1 that elle/daryl hannah is whisting as she’s going to kill “the bride”/beatrix kiddo/uma thurman.
it was one of those songs that got stuck in my head after every time i watched to movie so i had to buy it.
if you’ve seen kill bill, you know this song. if you haven’t seen kill bill, i forgive you. it’s friday, go to the movie store, or if you’re a tarantino fan just go buy it. you won’t be disappointed.

the line begins to blur- with teeth- nine inch nails
now, let’s barge our way into this calm, hippie love fest of a f³. s. with some nine inch nails. this song comes from “with teeth,” an album that was not immediately embraced by all, but most have come around.
this song starts off with a hard, heavy beat, with what sounds like trent screaming away from the microphone for a background effect. the chorus brings it all in with a classic melody, and ambiance before it’s torn apart again with that beat backed by,
“…is there somebody on top of me?
i don’t know, i don’t know
isn’t anybody stopping me?
i don’t know, i don’t know…”
for me and my significant other (who is the biggest nine inch nails fan i know) there is nothing that trent reznor can do that won’t please us. including (for those of you who don’t know) his newest 36 track instrumental album ghosts I-IV.

overdue- on a wire- the get up kids
“on a wire” is one of my “desert island” albums. no matter how many times i listen to it i could never get sick of it. from every conceivable angle it is simply perfect.
“overdue” is the opening track to “on a wire,” and a damn good one at that. slowly, instrument by instrument, sound by sound it eases you into the album. by the time the chorus arrives you’re set on cruise and you just enjoy the ride for the rest of the album.
tomorrow marks the three year anniversary. the get up kids announced their untimely end on tuesday, march 8, 2005, and in turn broke the hearts of thousands of indie rock/emo kids worldwide. in memory of the late get up kids, join me and rock out to your favorite get up kids song or album tomorrow.
the best always go first… oh despair.

So excited!
